We had such a great time last year, so we are doing it again.
But before I tell you all about the plans for this year, here’s a little background on SPIT and Manila Improv Festival 2012.
SPIT is Manila’s premiere improvisational theater group and we have been performing practically every week for the past 11 years.
To celebrate our 10th anniversary, we decided to mount the 2012 Manila Improv Festival last June at Quantum Cafe and the College of St. Benilde.
The 3 day festival had performances from teams from Cebu, Bacolod, Taichung, Hong Kong, Beijing, Los Angeles and Manila, workshops by Shaun Landry, Tom Farnan, Thea Yrastorza and Missy Maramara, a historical walking tour by Carlos Celdran, wonderful meals prepared by Quantum Cafe and Aristocrat Restaurant as well as loads and loads of fun and learning experienced by the participants.
This year we decided to mount the festival again.
Here are the details that we have so far for the Manila Improv Festival 2013.
Performances for Manila Improv Festival 2013 are from June 27-30 at the PETA Theater Center in Quezon City.
We are currently putting together a program that will include a historical city tour and post performance parties together with workshops taught by Gabe Mercado and a pre-festival Applied Improvisation mini conference (June 25-26) which we are particularly excited about.
Applied Improvisation explores the use of improvisation techniques and methods for non theatrical purposes. The movement has been gaining significant traction over the past few years in corporate circles with many of the world’s top corporations such as Google and Apple actually rolling out applied improvisation workshops for their employees.
For the festival proper, groups that are interested in performing would be asked to prepare a 45 minute to 1 hour set (either long form or short form) and can look forward to performing twice during the festival, on different nights. We can provide assistance in sourcing simple props and costumes as well as in arranging for basic light and sound requirements.
Groups will be asked to come at their own expense. We are, however, currently working on discounts and sponsorships for hotels and accommodations in the general vicinity of the theater. We also shall provide great food for the festival performers on the evening of their performances and all the love and hospitality that you can expect from us as festival hosts.
Ticket proceeds will go entirely towards logistical expenses for the festival.
SPIT is also with several of our top major newspapers, magazines and radio and tv stations to promote and cover the festival.
